Feeling virtuous that I made it to 9.30pm before needing to go to bed.

Jetlag is a sonofabitch.

Tuesday, 30 August 2016

Back to (work) life, back to reality...

Monday, 29 August 2016

Can I push through my jetlag until at least 9pm so I don't wake up at a stupidly early hour tomorrow??

$1,000,000 question...

Sunday, 28 August 2016

As if it's not bad enough to have to come back to Australia, the universe mocks me with losing a whole day travelling back from the States and twists the knife by seating me next to a manspreading woman, who doesn't get the concept of personal space.

On the upside, the most adorable little girls befriended me in the departure lounge. Lola, who has cerebral palsy, and her little sister (who's name also starts with an L, but I couldn't quite understand what it was) had been to Disneyland and were showing off their Dory and Judy stuffed toy collection and telling me about their favourite rides (Dumbo was the big hit). Their visits throughout the flight made it a lot more bearable having to sit next to Mrs Personal Space Invader.

About to end my US trip and jump on a long-haul flight to Melbs... despite home-dramas, I've managed to have an awesome time... and it really has reinforced my desire to return permanently. Since that's going to be unfeasible for a year or so at least, I'll just have to plan another trip sooner rather than later!

Friday, 26 August 2016

A sunny walk around the neighbourhood, some study time and dinner and drinks with the lovely Linaloo was an awesomely chilled way to spend my final (full) day in the US. Tomorrow starts the long journey back to chilly Melbs.

Caught the train into San Fran today and wandered around - painted ladies, farmer's markets, strolling along the wharf area. The level of homelessness is quite distressing... so many mentally ill and homeless people who have set up camp on the main streets. Literally every block had at least 5 homeless people on it. Apparently it's illegal in San Fran to move a homeless person on - they can stay where they like for as long as they like. Which sounds to me like the city is throwing its hands in the air and avoiding the problem of finding these people a safe place to live. Such a shame.

So much to see at Stanford University campus (including a museum with almost as much Rodin as the Musee Rodin in Paris!).

Tuesday, 23 August 2016

Farewell NYC - you've been amazing as always.

Hello California! First time back (for more than a brief stopover) in over 20 years! What do you have in store for me?!

Monday, 22 August 2016

Bid farewell to the Ranstar this morning (after breakfast with her NY 'mom') and headed off to Strand for too much book purchasing (is there such a thing?!), followed by lunch with the ever-lovely Matt and a taping of Late Night Seth. A fab way to end my time in NYC.

Sunday, 21 August 2016

Bid farewell to Matt's lovely Brooklyn abode and checked ourselves into the Ace Hotel for our last night(s) in NYC. Then we headed off to Mable's in Brooklyn where I ate my weight in brisket and candied yams.

Saturday, 20 August 2016

Two show day - first a matinee of The Color Purple which was incredible. Cynthia Erivo blew me away. What a voice. What a talent.

Then it was off to the Lincoln Center for Oslo. Jennifer Ehle - again - amazing.

Look the expectations for On Your Feet - The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan were never going to be high, and that's ok. It was fun. And the lead guy was waaaaaaaaay hotter than Emilio actually is. Talk about casting yourself cute.

Thursday, 18 August 2016

Tonight's delightful surprise of a show - Waitress. Original cast, which means I got to see Jessie Mueller, who was awesome. The surprise standout though, was Jenna Ushkowitz, who I only knew as  Glee's Tina Cohen-Chang. Her knockout performance leads me to believe that Glee absolutely wasted her talent. Fools.

Wednesday, 17 August 2016

Highlight of the day: going to a taping of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Bucket list tick.

Poignant moment of the day: late night jazz at Dizzy's Club at the Lincoln Center on the eve of what would've been Dada's 80th birthday. He would've loved NYC.

Tuesday, 16 August 2016

If ever the hashtag blessed applied to my life, it's tonight. Seeing Hamilton a whole year after I first heard the cast recording and 8 months after I booked my ticket was life changing.

"Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now..."

Monday, 15 August 2016

Hidden rooftop bars which overlook the Empire State Building... goddamn but I love you, NYC. One day I'll live here. One day.

Sunday, 14 August 2016

Goodbye, PA... hello NYC.

Starting the new week off with a bit of Carole King on Broadway. ALL THE FEELS.

Saturday, 13 August 2016

The Crayola Factory was fun, but shopping at the mall with one of my oldest friends and her 11yo daughter was even more so.

Oh and there are two stores I'm not allowed into again for at least a year... Coach and Anthropologie. I have NO will-power at either of them.

Friday, 12 August 2016

A summer cold, courtesy of my friend's kids AND wicked sunburn on my shoulders and nose. Jersey Shore memories.

Thursday, 11 August 2016

Hooley Dooley.

Jersey Shore, you are an eye opener.

Wednesday, 10 August 2016

The bus from DC to Atlantic City is one of the most hilarious I have been on. A bunch of retirees heading off for a session on the slots... "but we ain't gamblers... we just likes to play the slots you see".

Tuesday, 9 August 2016

Wandering the monuments of DC is still one of my most favourite things to do, even 20 years later.

Monday, 8 August 2016

OK well that's my clothes shopping done for the next year... almost US$700 at Anthropologie. Yoiks. Also, Georgetown, I've missed you.

Sunday, 7 August 2016

Well 14th north of M has certainly changed since I was last here. From prostitutes and drug addicts to  almost total gentrification... and some very cool bars.

Saturday, 6 August 2016

Lincoln Memorial - check
Washington Monument - check
Capitol Building - check
Folger Shakespeare Library - included reading room tour which only occurs once a week and only accepts 15 participants - check
Anthropologie - check

Distance walked - 13.5km

Feet still working? Not quite.

Friday, 5 August 2016

The gods may have tried to conspire against me getting on that plane, but once I did, they decided to cooperate. Through customs and immigration at LAX in under 10 mins and a hassle free ride into DC passing by my old haunts along the way. Thank you for your cooperation, gods of chance.

Thursday, 4 August 2016

Well this is becoming a bit of a day... and not in a good way. When my family decide to throw some shit at the fan, they THROW A FREAKING TRUCKLOAD.

Monday, 1 August 2016

I can sleep on the plane on Friday, right?
